Maya flicked her fingers and smiled dreamily at the spark that ignited from the tip of her index finger. She had only learnt that spell a few days before, and she liked the idea that she could call forth flames.
"Would you stop doing that?" a male voice asked tensely from her right. "You've been doing that all morning"
"I know" she continued to snap her fingers. "Its just hypnotic"
"Its just stupid" the man said, turning another page in the large book. The pair were sat in the Otherworlde Library, a far cry from modern libraries of the Mortal Realm - filled with books on magic and arcane law. John was an initiate of the librarian guard, and Maya was his unfortunate shadow. She didnt realise what she was doing most of the time, today especially. John's sponsor, Niamh, was on the warpath again.
"You're stupid" John slammed down his book and gave Maya the evil eye.
"Put that out before we get caught"
"Oh?" Maya leant on the table, extinguishing her flaming fingertips as she did so. "We not supposed to be here?"
"You're not supposed to be here" he pointed a finger at her as he stood from the desk. "You're not supposed to know about the library"
"Oh, dont go all cryptic on me. When do I get to do some of the big stuff"
"When you stop being fascinated by your finger tips" John replied. "Besides, its dangerous. Thats why the library was created"
"But you do it" John pinched the bridge of his nose. He'd walked into that one, and Maya was likely to hold it over his head.
"Fine. Pick a book. Make sure its an incantation one - I'd hate to get my hands on a ritualistic tome" his voice lowered as he put the book he'd been reading back.
"This one" Maya held out a black bound volume, slim for the majority of the library's contents. It also didnt have a wax seal, which John assumed meant it was safe.
"Summoning the Samurai" he read the title out loud, and flicked through the pages. "Maya, its written in Old Kyoko Yokano, I can't read this"
"Aww" Maya pouted. "Can we find anyone who can?" John gave her a twitchy look.
"You want to do this that badly?" Maya nodded enthusiastically, her finger tips sparking again. Looking around, John slid the book into his knapsack and folded the flap over it with slow cautiousness. "Lets get you out of here before the dwarf comes back" he motioned her along the rows of books, unaware that the book in his bag began to glow - a single kanji symbol glowing red.
As John pushed Maya out through the main door, he heard someone coming his way. The rustle of fabric made him reach for his sword - the books frequently spitting forth femme fatales. As the steel slid from the worn leather scabbard, a pale faced woman turned the corner - her robe swishing as she walked.
"Oh" she stopped, putting her hand to her elegantly painted lips and folded her arms into her sleeves. "What are you doing, John?"
"I thought I heard something" John said, looking the Cleric up and down with easy smile. The kitsune cleric Yokai was notorious for wearing japanese clothing - today's robe a beautiful blue that matched her shocking makeup choice.
"I hope it was not me who made you draw your sword" she said with a small giggle.
And from the smoke stood a woman.
"Konnichi wa"
"I dont speak Japanese" Maya whispered to John from the floor. "Do you?"
"Of course I dont"
"I speak grud English" the woman said haltingly.
"Oh. Excellent" John gave Maya a glance. "Then what is your name?"
"I have no name" the woman said, her eyes catching the firelight from Maya's hand.
"Then, until you name yourself, we'll call you ... nameless"
"Mumei" the woman said quickly - as if she heard the english word and translated it into Japanese.
